This 13-day Kathmandu, Thimphu, Punakha, and Paro journey takes you through six of the most renowned and rewarding destinations in the Himalayas, each offering a completely different experience, landscape, and cultural flavor.

Kathmandu: The Ancient Capital of Nepal

Kathmandu is Nepal’s vibrant capital and cultural heart, home to seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites within the valley, and you have a chance to visit four of them. From the sacred ghats of Pashupatinath and the golden spires of Boudhanath Stupa and Swayambhunath Stupa to the historic Kathmandu Durbar Square of the Newari kings, the Kathmandu day tour offers an unmatched immersion into Nepal’s 2,000 years of art, religion, and living heritage.

Pokhara: Nepal’s Lakeside Himalayan Paradise

Nestled beside the serene Phewa Lake with the Annapurna and Machhapuchhre ranges as its backdrop, Pokhara is one of the most mesmerizing cities in Asia. Known for its relaxed atmosphere, outstanding sunrise viewpoints at Sarangkot, and getaway access to the Annapurna trekking region, Pokhara offers a perfect contrast to the energy of Kathmandu.

Visitors can explore glorious Phewa Lake, where colorful boats glide across calm waters that reflect the snow-capped peak of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail Mountain) and the Barahi Temple in the middle of the lake. Explore the World Peace Pagoda (Shanti Stupa), Pumdikot (51-foot-tall Shiva statue), Gupteshwor Cave, and Devi’s Fall, making Pokhara one of the most scenic destinations included in this Nepal and Bhutan tour package 2026.

Chitwan: Nepal’s Premier Wildlife Destination

Chitwan National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Nepal’s first wildlife reserve. Spread across the subtropical lowlands of Nepal’s Terai region, Chitwan is home to the one-horned rhinoceros, Royal Bengal tiger, wild elephants, gharial crocodiles, and over 600 species of birds. Jungle safaris, canoe rides, and Tharu cultural dances and cuisines make Chitwan an unmissable highlight of any Nepal, Bhutan, and Chitwan tour.

Thimphu: Bhutan’s Unique and Tradition-Rich Capital

Thimphu stands apart as one of the world’s most fascinating capital cities, where centuries-old Buddhist traditions blend naturally with contemporary life. Unlike many fast-paced urban centers, Bhutan’s capital maintains a relaxed atmosphere without traffic lights or crowded skylines. Visitors can admire the impressive Tashichho Dzong, witness the towering Buddha Dordenma statue overlooking the valley, and explore colorful local markets filled with handicrafts, textiles, and Bhutanese daily life. Thimphu offers an authentic introduction to Bhutan’s traditions, architecture, and way of life.

Punakha: Bhutan’s Ancient Winter Capital

Punakha is considered one of Bhutan’s most captivating destinations, celebrated for its fertile valleys, mild climate, and scenic landscapes surrounded by terraced fields and rivers. As the former capital of Bhutan, the region carries deep historical and spiritual significance. Its centerpiece, the magnificent Punakha Dzong, stands dramatically at the meeting points of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers and is regarded as one of Bhutan’s finest architectural landmarks. With its picturesque surroundings, cultural importance, and tranquil countryside charm, Punakha remains a memorable stop on any Bhutan journey.

Paro: The Valley of Tiger’s Nest

Paro is one of Bhutan’s treasured destinations, renowned for its breathtaking mountain scenery, spiritual landmarks, and deep cultural heritage. The valley is home to the world-famous Taksang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest Monastery), perched dramatically on a sheer cliff face 900 meters above the valley and regarded as a sacred pilgrimage site. Beyond this iconic attraction, visitors can discover the historic Rinpung Dzong, explore the National Museum of Bhutan, and wander through Paro’s traditional street lined with local shops and Bhutanese architecture. With its splendid landscapes and timeless charm, Paro provides a memorable conclusion to your Nepal and Bhutan journey.

This return day allows time to unwind and prepare for the upcoming Bhutan portion of your Nepal and Bhutan tour itinerary.

In the evening, your guide will provide a short briefing about your Kathmandu to Paro, Bhutan, flight, travel arrangements, and important details for the next stage of your Himalayan journey.

Today marks the beginning of your Bhutan journey. After breakfast, transfer to Tribhuvan International Airport for your Kathmandu to Paro flight, widely regarded as one of the most thrilling and beautiful mountain landings in aviation. As your aircraft navigates through towering Himalayan peaks, you’ll be treated to splendid aerial views of Mt. Everest (8,848.86 m), Kanchenjunga (8,586 m), and the sacred Chomolhari peak (7,326 m) of Bhutan.

On arrival at Paro International Airport, and after completing arrival formalities, you’ll be received by your dedicated Bhutanese guide and driver and begin a scenic drive to Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan. The journey follows incredible river valleys and remote mountain landscapes.

Thimphu offers an interesting contrast between traditional Bhutanese heritage and modern daily life. Settle in your hotel and enjoy an evening walk in Thimphu’s Clock Tower Square, depending upon your remaining time after arrival.

After breakfast, start a guided Thimphu sightseeing tour and discover the cultural and historical destinations of Bhutan’s capital city. This Thimphu city tour introduces the impressive Tashichho Dzong, an iconic fortress-monastery that houses government offices and the throne room of Bhutan’s king. Continue to the 169-foot-tall Buddha Dordenma, towering over the Thimphu Valley, the giant golden Buddha statue. You may also explore the National Memorial Chorten, local handicraft markets, and cultural sites.

After sightseeing, resume your scenic drive from Thimphu to Punakha via the fascinating Dochula Pass. In clear weather, the pass rewards visitors with surreal views of 30 Himalayan peaks exceeding 7,000 meters, including Gangkhar Puensum and the popular 108 memorial chortens encircled by mountain landscapes and forests. Take some rest after arriving at the Punakha hotel.

Embark on the day with a notable Punakha sightseeing tour through Bhutan’s most charming valleys. Known for its fertile landscapes, riverside scenery, and historical significance. Visit the magnificent Punakha Dzong (Palace of Great Happiness), which was built in 1637. This fortress-monastery stands at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers. Continue to Bhutan’s longest suspension bridge, draped in colorful prayer flags.

You may also take a short excursion to Khamsum Yulley, a hilltop temple reached through scenic rice terraces and countryside trails. Later, begin your drive from Punakha to Paro (approx. 120 km), passing mountain landscapes and traditional Bhutanese villages along the way. En route, stop at Simtokha Dzong, built in 1629, one of Bhutan’s oldest fortress monasteries, now serving as a school for Buddhist studies. Arrive in Paro in the evening and enjoy free time to explore the town and prepare for tomorrow’s Tiger’s Nest hike.

Today offers one of the most authentic experiences of your Nepal and Bhutan tour package, with an exhilarating hike to Tiger’s Nest Monastery (Taktsang Monastery), Bhutan’s revered spiritual landmark. Beguilingly perched on a sheer cliffside approximately 900 meters above the Paro Valley, this sacred monastery is the most photographed destination and an important pilgrimage site.

The Tiger’s Nest Monastery hike takes around five to six hours on a round trip and passes through pine and rhododendron forests, prayer flags, and marvelous viewpoints overlooking the valley below. A rest stop at the viewpoint cafe for stunning photo opportunities before continuing toward the monastery.

After returning from the hike and enjoying lunch, continue with Paro Valley sightseeing and discover some of the region’s important historical landmarks. Visit the amazing Rinpung Dzong, explore the National Museum of Bhutan, and later in the evening, unwind with an optional traditional Bhutanese hot stone bath experience, where river stones heated by fire are placed into a wooden bath infused with medicinal herbs. Popular among visitors and locals alike, this traditional wellness ritual is believed to help relax muscles and rejuvenate the body after a hike.

Please note: A traditional Bhutanese hot stone bath is available as an optional wellness experience in Paro and typically costs around USD 30 to 50 per person. Travelers can also upgrade to a riverside or hilltop setting for an additional USD 7 to 10. It is highly recommended after the Tiger’s Nest hike to soothe muscles and enjoy traditional Bhutanese healing experiences.

Today is a combination of spirituality, mountain landscapes, cultural explorations, and local wellness traditions.

After a final breakfast in Paro, transfer to Paro International Airport for your return Paro-to-Kathmandu flight (approx. 8 km), bringing your satisfying and unforgettable experience to a close. This flight once again provides you with exceptional aerial views of towering peaks and other mountain ranges.

Arrive in Kathmandu by midday; our (GAT) representative will receive you at Tribhuvan International Airport and transfer you to your hotel. The remainder of the day is free to roam around the lively streets of Thamel. You may choose to purchase keepsakes, handicrafts, thangka paintings, Tibetan crafts, pashmina products, prayer flags, and traditional local items before your international departure.
