You still have time on hand before heading back to your hotel. Explore the local Thamel scene, visit cozy cafes and restaurants, and experience the vibrant lifestyle of Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu.

Note: If you are unable to locate our airport representative at the arrival terminal, please contact us (Rajan Dahal) at 9841527668.

Today, you will spend your day in final preparations for the trek and experiencing the cultural richness of Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu. After breakfast in your Thamel hotel, you will head out on a Kathmandu city tour. The tour includes an immersive exploration of the Swyambhunath, also known as the Monkey Temple, the revered Hindu temple of Pashupatinath, and the serene Boudha Stupa.

After the cultural tour, you will coordinate with your guide to conduct a thorough gear and equipment check to ensure you are well-equipped for the remote trek. We will also finalize all necessary permits, and everything will be in perfect order before you depart for the Kanchenjunga trails.

Your epic journey to Kanchenjunga Base Camp officially kicks off with an early morning flight from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur. Located in the eastern plains of Terai, you will fly across the diverse landscape on a scenic 45-minute flight. During your journey, you will find aerial views of the Himalayan range.

Upon landing in Bhadrapur, you will take a long but fascinating drive to Taplejung. Experience the winding roads along the vast tea gardens, rolling hills, small market towns, and terraced farmlands. This overland journey introduces you to the rural life and the diverse landscapes of eastern Nepal.

You will depart from Taplejung after an early morning breakfast. Today, your journey takes you on a rugged jeep drive to Sekathum. The 5-hour drive is a bumpy adventure along the Tamur River. After reaching Sekathum, you will officially begin the trek to Kanchenjunga Base Camp.

As you head to your overnight destination in Itahari, you will pass through a mix of lush forests and charming local communities across several suspension bridges. Today’s walk is relatively gentle. This is an ideal opportunity to acclimate and find your rhythm for trekking.

Following a two-day drive, our hiking expedition kicks off with a hearty breakfast in Sekathum. Embarking on the thrilling journey through the Himalayas, we'll ascend along the Ghunsa Khola/river, crossing numerous bridges and hiking through lush forests. The trekking trail will lead us past quaint settlements like Jonggim and Ghaiyabari before arriving at Amjilosa. Get ready for an adventure amidst the breathtaking landscapes of the Himalayan region. Spend the night at the guest house.

After breakfast at the Amjilessa teahouse, you will continue on your journey. Your trek takes you on a northward travel, along the contours of the Ghunsa Khola Valley. Today, you will trek through a mix of bamboo, fir, and rhododendron forests. You will encounter sections carved onto the side of the hills, offering dramatic views of the beautiful landscape, comprising deep gorges and cascading waterfalls.

As you trek to Gyabla, you will cross wooden bridges over gentle streams before finding border landscapes. Here, you will begin to experience a shift in culture and architecture. Gyabala is a charming village with strong Tibetan influences. You will find the Tibetan influences evident in the side of the hills, offering dramatic views of the beautiful landscape, which comprises stone houses and prayer flags in the settlement.

Today is a major milestone in the trek, as you step into the main hub of the Kanchenjunga region. To reach Ghunsa, you will need to take on gradual ascents through lush pine and rhododendron forests from Gyabla. Your journey takes you across the Tibetan refugee settlement of Phale, which is known for its local handicrafts and carpets.

From Phale, the path continues through a broad valley. Take in the awe-inspiring views of the surrounding peaks as you move closer toward Ghunsa. After a 5 to 6-hour trek, you will reach the vibrant Sherpa village of Ghunsa. Here, you can find a monastery, a health post, and several well-established teahouses.

This is a bustling hub of the remote area treks of the Kanchanjunga region, but it is also known for preserving its age-old traditions and heritage.

Today is a crucial part of your trek as you acclimatize to the altitude gain. Acclimatization is an important process that helps you adjust to the increasing altitude and eliminates the risks of altitude sickness. To allow your body to better cope with the Himalayan conditions, you will follow the principle of “climb high, sleep low.”

The day begins with an early morning breakfast at the Ghunsa teahouse. After breakfast, you will prepare to leave for the acclimatization hike to the Lapsang La viewpoint. From this vantage point, you will find incredible panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, including the Jannu Himal.

After a 4-5 hour journey, you will reach Ghunsa for lunch. Take some time to rest and refuel. After lunch, you can explore the Ghunsa village, visit the local Tashi Choding Gumba, and interact with the friendly Sherpa community.

After a beneficial acclimatization day, you will leave Ghunsa behind and enter more rugged trails and a wild alpine landscape, leading you to your overnight destination of Kambachen. Today, your journey takes you along the Ghunsa Khola through larch and juniper forests before taking you to the beautiful but rocky Himalayan terrain.

During your trek, you will find a spectacular view of the Jannu Himal, or Mount Kumbakarna. This majestic peak dominates the skyline, making its presence prominent throughout the day’s trek. The best morning light for photographing Jannu Himal is from the small ridge just above Kambachen village. Ask your guide to show you the spot.

As you move forward to Kambachen, you will navigate your way across steep ascents through landslide-prone areas. Ensure careful footing to minimize the risks of injury. After completing this climb, you will reach the remote village of Kambachen.

Kambachen is a small collection of stone huts, situated in a wide, glacial valley that offers an authentic feel of being in the heart of the Himalayas.

Today’s trek takes you to the Jannu Base Camp, or the Kumbakarna Base Camp. During your journey, you will take in awe-inspiring mountain vistas and gradually hike to a higher altitude, helping your body better acclimatize to the Himalayan environment.

The trail to the Jannu Base Camp consists of several challenges. You will overcome steep climbs over rocky moraines. However, the effort is rewarding. As you approach the base camp, you will find the north face of Jannu locking eyes with yours. You will also see a giant wall of ice, standing as one of the toughest challenges for mountaineers.

Furthermore, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the surrounding glaciers and icy peaks. After spending some time in the Jannu Base Camp, you will retrace your steps to Kambachen and prepare for the ascent to Kanchenjunga’s north side.

Today’s trek to Lhonak from Kambachen takes you deeper into the high-altitude desert-like terrain. You will follow the trails along the edge of a glacial moraine, where the terrain gradually turns rocky and sparse. Along the way, you will pass the Ramtang Monastery and several streams made from melting glaciers.

As you approach the village of Lhonak, the valley widens, offering a stunning view of the beautiful yet desolate plateau surrounded by towering peaks. Lhonak is an isolated settlement with just a few teahouses. This is also the final outpost before the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp.

Today is the pinnacle of your Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek as you will reach the highest point of the entire trek. You will begin your day early at the North Base Camp or Pangema, following the moraine of the Kanchenjunga Glacier. Throughout the trek, you will relish the awe-inspiring views of the surrounding landscape.

Today’s journey is challenging but has incredible rewards. Upon reaching the Pangpema vantage point, you will find a panoramic view of the entire Kanchenjunga massif. Enjoy the sights of the main peak, Wedge Peak, and Tent Peak from the foot of the world’s third-highest mountain.

After this deeply moving experience, you will prepare to descend to Lhonak for a well-earned rest.

After a strenuous Pangpema ascent, you will travel downhill, retracing your journey toward Ghunsa. The journey is long, but as you approach a lower altitude, you will find it significantly easier than your previous days’ hike.

On your way, you will pass through familiar landscapes of Kambachen, find awe-inspiring views of Jannu Himal from different perspectives, and appreciate the vast glacial valley and the rugged Himalayan terrain.

By early evening, you will reach Ghunsa. You can explore the locality or enjoy a warm cup of tea, relishing the sunset view from your cozy teahouse.

The journey to Selele Base Camps takes you away from the main Kanchenjunga trail and into the challenging southern-side crossing. You will begin your journey with a steep uphill ascent through rhododendron and juniper forests. This is a tough section where you will gain significant altitude in a relatively short distance.

As you gradually hike outside the sub-tropical forests, you will enter a transformative terrain mostly comprising alpine meadows and scrubland. This high-altitude route is less frequented and rugged. Watch your footing for a safe journey during this challenging section.

After a 5-6 hour hike, you will reach Selele Base Camp. This base camp is a small clearing in the Himalayan terrain with basic teahouses or a tented camp. Prepare to withstand the chilling weather as you head to your teahouse to rest for the big pass-crossing the next day.

Today’s journey is considered the most challenging, but rewarding, of the entire 22-day Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek. The day begins before dawn. With the help of headlamps, you will trek the rugged Himalayan terrain, crossing several high passes. On this pre-dawn trek, you will begin the pass crossings from Selele La Pass (4,290 meters) and head toward Sinion La Pass (4,440 meters) and Mirgin La Pass (4,480 meters).

This is a strenuous and challenging journey. However, you will find breathtaking views from the pass summit, offering panoramic views of Mount Makalu, Mount Everest, Lhotse, and the entire Kanchenjunga range.

After crossing all passes, a long and steep descent awaits. You will trek through the Himalayan paths to Cheram via the rocky trails of the Cimbuwa Khola valley.

After the tough ascent, your journey today is gentler and shorter. Today’s journey begins as you leave Cheram behind and travel alongside the lateral moraine of the Yalung Glacier. You will cross several settlements, including Lapsang. From here, you will find the valley open up, with stunning views of the surrounding peaks, including Kabru and Rathong.

After a short 3-4 hour trek, you will reach Ramche. Ramche is a small outpost with few basic teahouses.

Today, you will take on a journey to your second major destination. The day begins early as you head to Oktang, the viewpoint of the Kanchenjunga South Base Camp. During your journey, you will pass the trails along the sacred Oktang Lake. From here, you can get a magnificent close-up view of the Kanchanjunga South Face and the vast Yalung Glacier.

After spending some time taking in the raw natural beauty, you will begin your downhill journey, retracing your steps past Ramche and Cheram. The journey further continues down a steep trail through lush sub-tropical forest toward Tortong. Today’s journey is long but satisfying.

As you leave Tortung behind, you will continue the long descent. The trail to Tortong consists of steep drops as you traverse along the beautiful landscape comprising rhododendron forests and bamboo shrubs. This region is a habitat of the endangered red panda. Keep your cameras ready to capture the images of this rare wildlife.

You will gradually descend to a lower elevation area, into terraced fields and charming Limbu and Rai villages, before reaching your overnight destination at Kaesewa or Kansera.

Today is your final day on the Kanchenjunga Base Camp trail. Your journey begins with a short hike from Khesewa down to the roadhead at Zero Point. Here, your incredible hike comes to an end. You will board a jeep and drive to Taplejung for your much-deserved rest.

Before heading back to Kathmandu, you have a day to explore the beautiful landscapes of eastern Nepal. Today, you will take a scenic drive to the tea estates. Enjoy the scenic drive into the lush tea plantation of Illam and Kanyam.

You will check into your hotel and spend the rest of the evening visiting the tea gardens, learning about tea processing, and enjoying the tranquil environment.

Your final day in eastern Nepal begins with a relaxing breakfast amid the tea gardens. After breakfast, you will head to the Bhadrapur Airport to catch your short but scenic flight to Kathmandu.

Upon reaching Kathmandu, you will be transferred to your hotel. You can de-stress in Kathmandu, visit cozy cafes, do souvenir shopping, or enjoy a celebratory dinner before departing from Nepal.

Your incredible 22-day Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek concludes today. Your guide from Global Adventure Trekking will pick you up 3 hours before your boarding time and help you transfer to the Tribhuvan International Airport.

Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek Accommodation

The Kanchenjunga Base Camp trek takes you on off-the-beaten-path trails in one of the most secluded treks in Nepal. Despite the remote location, you will find clean and comfortable accommodations throughout the 22-day trek.

While the accommodation in the trekking routes is basic, the urban areas of Taplejunga, Illam, Kanyam, and Kathmandu provide well-equipped hotels with all amenities. Moreover, during your Kathmandu stay, you will be placed in Thamel, where you can find all modern amenities, including hot water, a shower, Wi-Fi, and other services on request.

In the Kanchenjunga region, you will stay in basic teahouses. The higher you go, the fewer facilities. However, you can still expect warm hospitality and authentic Himalayan experiences throughout the trek.

Extra Facilities

  • Electricity and Charging:

Most teahouses on the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trekking trails depend on solar-powered energy. You will find facilities to charge your electronic devices. However, they come at an extra cost.

  • Wi-Fi and Mobile Network:

Wi-Fi is available at most lower-region teahouses. You will pay extra for Wi-Fi facilities in your teahouse. However, expect slow connectivity and an unreliable network, especially at higher altitudes. Likewise, the mobile network is decent in lower regions like Taplejung and Ghunsa, but becomes unreliable or nonexistent as you approach higher elevations.

  • Heating Dining Areas:

Communal dining halls are warm and cozy. You can spend time relaxing, eating, and socializing with fellow trekkers by the heated wood-burning stove, creating a lively atmosphere.

Nepal Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trekking Food and Drinking Water Facilities

You will find basic but nourishing food, typically comprising the Nepali staple of Dal-Bhat, during your Kanchenjunga Base Camp trek. Lower altitude villages may offer additional food options like porridge, noodles, and momo, but being an isolated region, most establishments serve dishes of the local region.

Likewise, drinking water is available along the trekking route. Teahouses sell safe, boiled water, which you can fill into your bottles. You will also find bottled water. However, to preserve the pristine environment of the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area, we strongly recommend carrying a personal reusable bottle and trekking with your water with purification tablets.

Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek: Transportation Options

You can choose between a local bus or a private vehicle, depending on your budget and preference. Both modes of transport take you from Kathmandu to Kanchenjunga via Taplejung.

Local Bus Option: Local buses depart from Kathmandu’s  Gongabu Bus Park, also known as Naya Bus Park. The journey lasts approximately 17 to 18 hours and passes through Taplejung or Phidim and costs between NPR 3,200 to NPR 3,500 (approx. USD 14 to 16) per person.

Private Vehicle Option: Another alternative for a more private commute is hiring a private jeep. You can either hire your vehicle directly from Kathmandu or take a local bus to Birtamod and continue your journey on a private jeep. This journey begins from Kathmandu and winds along Birtamod, Taplejung, before eventually dropping you off at Sekathum or Simik.  The cost of the private Jeep will be between USD 250-300 per Jeep. 6 Pearson could be accommodated.

Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek Difficulty: Is it suitable for me?

The Kanchenjunga Base Camp trek is a strenuous 22-day journey across one of Nepal’s most isolated trekking destinations. This demanding journey takes you across rugged Himalayan wilderness to the foot of the world’s third-highest peak.

The Kanchenjunga Base Camp trek is only recommended for trekkers with good physical fitness, strong morale, and a high level of stamina. Additionally, it further benefits trekkers if they have had experience in the vast Himalayas. Each day requires you to walk 6 to 7 hours and pass several high-altitude regions, including the Sela La Pass and Kanchenjunga Northern Base Camp.

Also, the high-altitude trek poses high risks of altitude sickness. To combat this, you need to take proper precautions. Furthermore, we have set acclimatization points that ensure a safe and successful trek.

Our itinerary is meticulously crafted with precise rest days in Ghunsa. On the acclimatization day, you will follow the principle of “hike high, and sleep low,” where you will trek to a higher altitude before returning to your low-altitude teahouse to rest and refuel for the more demanding trek ahead. This also helps your body adjust to the thinning air, reducing the risks of altitude sickness.

Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek: 22 Days Itinerary and Cost FAQs

Feature

Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek Manaslu Circuit Trek

Itinerary and Duration

This is a longer trek that takes 22 days to complete. You can visit both the North and South Base camps of Mount Kanchenjunga.

Manaslu Circuit Trek is a shorter journey, lasting approximately 17 days. This trek circumnavigates the world’s eight-highest peak.

Remoteness and Crowds

The Kanchenjunga Base Camp trek is among the most isolated treks that offer true solitude and wilderness.

Manaslu Circuit Trek is more frequented compared to the Kanchenjunga Base Camp trek, but still less crowded than the Everest Base Camp trek or the Annapurna Base Camp trek.

Cultural Experience

Experience the rich culture and warm hospitality of the ethnic Rai and Limbu communities in the lower regions, and the Tibetan-Sherpas of the higher elevations.

Offers a deep immersion into the Nubri and Tsum Valley cultures, which have strong Tibetan-Buddhist influences.

Carrying approximately USD 20 to USD 25 per day in Nepali rupees is recommended for trekkers. This cash will cover personal expenses that are not included in the package.

Yes, comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory for the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek. Your policy must cover high-altitude trekking (up to 6,000 meters) and, most importantly, emergency helicopter evacuation. This is a critical safety measure due to the trek's remoteness and the potential risks involved.

You will need two essential permits for this trek: the Kanchenjunga Restricted Area Permit (RAP) and the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Project (KCAP) Permit. These permits are arranged by Global Adventure Trekking as part of the booking process.

No. To ensure trekker’s safety and the region’s cultural and heritage preservation, solo or independent trekking is not permitted in the Kanchenjunga region. You can trek with a licensed Nepali guide, and there must be a minimum of two trekkers in a group.

Accommodation on the Kanchenjunga trek is in basic teahouses. You will be provided with a room with two single beds, a mattress, a pillow, and a blanket. The food menu is simple but nourishing, with the Nepali staple of Dal Bhat (rice, lentils, and vegetables) being the most common and reliable option. You can also find items like noodles, porridge, and potatoes.

You need to be physically and mentally fit to complete the Kanchenjunga Base Camp trek. Ensure you can walk 6-8 hours daily over rugged Himalayan terrain. It is also beneficial if you have prior high-altitude trekking experience.

There is a significant risk of altitude sickness on this trek as you will be sleeping above 4,000 meters for several nights and reaching a maximum height of over 5,100 meters. For prevention of altitude sickness-related symptoms, be sure to follow a carefully planned itinerary with sufficient acclimatization days, walk at a slow and comfortable pace, stay well-hydrated, and listen to your body.

The mobile network is decent in lower regions, but becomes unreliable or nonexistent as you approach higher elevations.

While not legally mandatory like a guide, hiring a porter is highly recommended for your safety and enjoyment.
