Starting from Lukla, the Gokyo Valley Trek takes you towards Renjo Pass (5,360 meters).
The initial part of the Gokyo Valley Trek follows the Everest Base Camp Trek route. However, the route deviates as we reach and acclimatize in Namche Bazaar. From there, we ascend to Dole and then walk on a different part of the Everest trekking region. En route, we pass several villages, waterfalls, rivers, suspension bridges, glimpses of several mountains, and a lovely scent of nature. *Lukla Flight Information: During peak seasons (March to May and September to November), all Lukla flights are diverted to Ramechhap Airport, situated 5 to 6 hours' drive from Kathmandu. Flights from Kathmandu operate only in off off-season (December to February and June to August). There are high chances of flight cancellations or delays due to bad weather. Therefore, we strongly suggest adding two buffer days to your itinerary.
Today, you will arrive in Kathmandu via Tribhuvan International Airport. Upon your arrival, you will meet our representatives at the arrival gates, who will greet you with a warm welcome before assisting you with your transfer to your hotel. Check into your hotel, and take some time to rest. In the evening, prepare for your incredible journey through the Khumbu region.
Note: If you are unable to locate our airport representative at the arrival terminal, please contact Rajan Dahal at 9841527668.
Today, your day begins with an early morning flight to Lukla. During this scenic journey to the gateway to the Everest region, you will enjoy spectacular views of the Himalayas as the landscape changes from lush hills to icy peaks. Upon landing, you will meet the rest of your crew and begin your trek from Lukla’s Tenzing-Hillary Airport to Phakding.
Most flights from Kathmandu to Lukla during peak seasons (March to May and September to November) operate from Ramechhap due to air traffic congestion. Seats on the Lukla flights from Kathmandu are extremely limited and sell out months in advance. Book early to secure your direct flight from Kathmandu. If flights are not available, you can take a 4-5 hour drive from Kathmandu. You will board a sharing jeep/Hi-ace Van from Thamel (Garden of Dreams) that departs for Ramechhap between 1 to 2 AM. For a more private travel, you can book a private vehicle at an extra cost.
Upon reaching Ramechhap, you will board a flight to Lukla. From Lukla, your trek to Phakding begins immediately. The route gradually descends toward the Chaurikharka village along the Dudh Koshi River. You will hike across several charming Sherpa villages along the lush lowlands on a 4-hour hike before reaching Phakding. Overnight stay in Phakding.
Helicopter Option: Helicopters are the best alternative for a quick and guaranteed flight to Lukla. can avoid the long-distance road travel to Ramechhap Airport and book a direct helicopter flight from Kathmandu to Lukla at an additional cost of USD 550 per person. The helicopter flight is operated on a sharing basis and consists of 5 passengers. The cost of an air ticket to Lukla is deducted while booking a helicopter flight to Lukla.
From Phakding, you will trek to the vibrant Sherpa town of Namche Bazaar. The journey follows the Dudh Koshi trails and passes across several suspension bridges, including the famous Hillary Suspension Bridge to Monjo. Upon reaching Monjo, you will enter the Sagarmatha National Park. Here, your permits and documents will be checked.
You have now come to the final leg of the day’s trek, which requires you to take on a steep ascent over the challenging pine forests. However, the ascent rewards you with your first glimpse of Mount Everest before reaching Namche Bazaar, the region’s commercial hub.
As mentioned earlier, ascending to Namche Bazaar also increases the chances of altitude sickness. Moreover, this is also a place where exploring is not possible in half of the day. Therefore, the Global Adventure Trekking team arranges an acclimatization day in Namche Bazaar on the fourth day.
Namche Bazaar is a highly developed town in the entire Everest region, which means that you can see several facilities like ATMs, bakeries, restaurants, and internet cafes at this place. Many trekkers love this place for the local hardened cheese (Chhurpi) produced here. We recommend the trekkers try this delicacy with many more while you stay in Namche Bazaar.
Besides, you can also go for a side day hike to the Everest View Hotel, located at an altitude of 3962 meters (13000 ft.). This will be the best thing to do while you are resting during the Gokyo Valley Trek with Gokyo Lakes. Moreover, on this day, we also recommend trekkers to interact with the locals and delve deeper into the lifestyle. tradition, and cultures of the Sherpa settlements.
After spending two nights in Namche Bazaar, it's time for the trekkers to get back on the Gokyo Valley Trekking route. On the fifth day, we ascend from Namche to Thame which takes around 3 hours if we follow a steady yet continuous pace. We suggest trekkers not to put in extra effort as we have already exceeded the altitude sickness barrier.
Walking to the North from Namche, we pass several settlements, floras, natural and wild vegetation, landscapes, and the amazing scent of nature. After 3 hours of walking, we finally stepped into the land of Sherpa. One of the major attractions of the Thame village is a monastery located here. The monks and other Buddhists from the local areas perform regular worship and rituals every day.
As compared to the day before, today's trek can be slightly difficult and certainly longer. After having breakfast at the hotel, we set off on a trek from Thame to Lunden. This takes us from 3800 meters to 4380 meters. Lunden is just one day away from the highest point of the entire Gokyo Valley Trekking expedition.
While ascending from Thame to Lunden, you will be accompanied by the views of surrounding peaks like the mighty Everest. We recommend trekkers to bed ready with wind-proof clothes because Lunden is mostly windy and the tea houses are not in such great conditions. Nevertheless, the pleasant breath that you can take here gives you the motivation to ascend to Gokyo Lake and Renjo La Pass the next day.
Finally, we are on the top of the Gokyo Valley Trek on the seventh day of the expedition. You will love what you see at this place because trekkers can find themselves surrounded by so many lakes. But before reaching Gokyo Lakes, we first stop at Renjo-La Pass (5,360 meters). This is one of the three passes of the Everest Three Pass Trekking adventure.
On your way from Lunden to Renjo-La Pass, we get another day to delve into the beauty of nature and give ourselves the therapy of walking in the woods. With Rhododendron blossoms at places, easy as well as difficult trails, and very less tea houses, we finally reach Renjo La Pass. From there the journey descends towards Gokyo Lakes, the most important attraction of the entire Gokyo Valley Trek (13 Days).
Gokyo Lakes, as mentioned earlier, are the major attraction of the entire Gokyo Valley Trekking map. On the eighth day, we explore the lakes while also enjoying the serenity and peace of the surrounding environment. If the weather is clear after having breakfast, we suggest trekkers ascend the Gokyo Ri, which offers an amazing view of the entire Khumbu region and the mighty Everest.
Moreover, you can also see several other snow-capped mountains like Cho-Oyu, Gyachung Kang, Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, and Makalu. If you walk about three kilometers, you can enjoy the serene environment around the fourth lake of the Gokyo Valley. Moreover, you can also continue to the fifth lake but we suggest you be aware of your physical fitness. For resting, we set up a tent beside the Gokyo Lake and spent the night peacefully.
After a breathtaking exploration of the turquoise Gokyo Lakes and Gokyo Valley, it is time to head back to the lower altitudes. You will retrace your steps across the first and second Gokyo Lakes and leave the Ngozumpa Glacier behind. Today’s downhill trek is more leisurely and gives you enough opportunities to appreciate the stunning scenery of the Khumbu region as you follow the trails to Dole.
The downhill trek along the Himalayas continues, retracing your path back to Namche Bazaar. You will walk along the dense rhododendron and pine forests and descend to Phortse Teng before taking on a short ascent to Mong La Pass. The rest of the journey is pleasant. You will reach the bustling town of Namche Bazaar after a 5-hour journey, where you can find modern amenities and access to hot showers and a wider variety of food.
Today’s trek marks the end of trekking in the Himalayas. You will follow the steep descent from Namche Bazaar along the Dudh Koshi River. The paths lead you to villages like Monjo and Phakding. From Phakding, a gentle ascent takes you to Lukla.
The day begins with a hearty breakfast, embracing the stunning mountain views one last time before leaving the Everest region. You will leave for the airport to board an early morning flight back to Kathmandu. The flight is short but offers scenic views of the magnificent Himalayas. Upon arriving in Kathmandu, you will be transferred to your hotel.

- Entering the Sagarmatha Conservation Area, you can expect to see several flora and fauna that might not be available anywhere else in the world.
- With the Global Adventure Trekking team, trekkers can expect a fully supportive, responsive, and successful trekking experience in the Gokyo Valley.
- Whether you are a new trekker or have several years of experience, you can expect this trekking package to be one of the best ways to prepare for other difficult treks in the Khumbu region.
What is Gokyo Valley Trek's Level of Difficulty?
Gokyo Valley Trek's level of difficulty completely depends on the weather chosen and the physical and mental preparation level of the trekkers. For some trekkers, this can only represent a practice trek for others, higher, and more difficult treks. On the other hand, for some people, this can be a very difficult trek due to its rock-covered route and steep trails.
However, if you plan properly as per the guidelines that we have listed below, you can do this trek almost half-time easily and efficiently. The trek takes us to over 5000 meters. Therefore, we cannot completely say that the Gokyo Valley Trekking route is not difficult at all. We recommend all trekkers and travelers prepare properly and do some prior research. Moreover, listening to the guides and following their instructions can also make the Gokyo Valley Trek somewhat easier.
What are the Transportation Facilities during the Gokyo Valley Trek?
Transportation facilities are arranged perfectly by the Global Adventure Trekking. Mostly, the journey from Kathmandu to Lukla is done via airplane. This takes around 30 minutes. However, if the weather is not so clear for a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, we take a drive to Ramechhap, which takes 4/5 hours, start very early in the morning from Kathmandu, and then fly to Lukla.
This Kathmandu-Ramechhap-Lukla route is also followed during the peak seasons because flight tickets might not be available as the number of trekkers visiting the Everest Base Camp Trek increases drastically. We request the trekkers to be prepared for both flight and drive while visiting Nepal for the Gokyo Valley Trek.
How to Prepare for the Gokyo Valley Trek?
Preparation for the Gokyo Valley Trek is very crucial for a safe and adventurous trekking in the Himalayas of Nepal. Remember that Gokyo Valley is located in the Everest region. Therefore, the weather and climatic conditions of this route are directly or indirectly influenced by Mount Everest. Without proper preparation and readiness, going for this trek might be a not-so-good idea even if you are a professional trekker with multiple trekking experiences.
Here's how we suggest all the trekkers prepare for the Gokyo Valley Trekking Package:
- Prioritize physical training and training focused on endurance and cardiovascular workouts.
- Make sure that you are mentally prepared for the Gokyo Valley Trek.
- For mental preparation, we suggest you go for meditation, and you can also practice yoga for the flexibility of the body.
- We recommend all the trekkers to do some research on the Gokyo Valley Trek on social media, by watching vlogs, reading blogs, and talking to the Global Adventure Trekking team.
- Remember to drink as much water as possible because hydration is highly required for physical fitness and stamina advancement.
- Make sure that you know how to use all the trekking gear and also have all the required equipment.
- Pack wisely; remember to carry all the necessary items with you, but do not make the backpack too heavy.
- Start training for the Gokyo Valley Trek almost a couple of months ago, because that is necessary to make sure that your body is ready for the trek.
- Go for some other trekking routes in Nepal, which are considered slightly easier than the Gokyo Valley Trek.
Best Season to Ascend on the Gokyo Valley Trail
As mentioned earlier, the weather and climatic conditions of the Gokyo Valley Trail is highly influenced by the weather conditions of Mount Everest. In Nepal, spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November) are considered the best time to trek. Therefore, if you want a rather easy trekking experience with a clear sky, pleasant views of the mountains, and chances to witness different flora and fauna, spring or autumn are the best seasons.
We recommend trekkers not to go for the Gokyo Valley Trek in the winter season (late November to February). This is because, in winter, the conditions are extreme. You might also find a lot of tea houses, guesthouses, and lodges closed during this season. Moreover, tenting in Gokyo Lake Trek is also impractical in the winter season because of the unbearable cold weather. In the monsoon season (June to August), humidity increases the chances of hydration, and the path also becomes more slippery. Due to all these reasons, the Global Adventure Trekking team strongly believes that spring and autumn are the best seasons for trekking the Gokyo Valley trail.
Food and Accommodation
Food and Accommodation are two of the major factors that ensure the success of your Gokyo Valley trekking itinerary. Global Adventure Trekking team arranges the best stay and food right as you drop off in Kathmandu. Even in the Khumbu region, our team makes sure that the trekkers are served the food of their choice and accommodations are cozy enough to rest deeply.
Some of the food options that you can get during the Gokyo Valley Trekking journey are Nepali cuisine, Indian cuisine, bread, eggs, momo, chowmein, noodles, biscuits, tea, coffee, and much more. Moreover, you can also pre-inform your food preferences so that we can arrange those foods for you during the Gokyo Valley Trek. We even provide well-cooked, fulfilling, and hygienic food while the trekkers are tenting at the Gokyo Lakes.
Talking about the accommodation, in Kathmandu, the Global Adventure Trekking team arranges a three-star level hotel. Also, during the trek, we arrange tea houses and lodges that offer the best (as far as possible) facilities, cozy rooms, good food, and warm hospitality. We make sure that no trekkers get disappointed with the accommodation and food, and regret spending their hard-earned money for visiting the Gokyo Valley Trek.
Are Facilities like Electricity, WiFi, and Mobile networks available in the Gokyo Valley Trek?
Up until Namche Bazaar, you can expect all the services and facilities like ATMs, electricity, WiFi, and mobile network with ease. Moreover, all these facilities are completely free of cost until Namche Bazaar. However, as we ascend to higher altitudes, these facilities start getting limited and the tea houses or lodges might also ask you extra money for these facilities. Nevertheless, throughout the Gokyo Valley Trek, except for the last two days in Gokyo Valley, electricity, WiFi, and mobile networks are available.
Due to the advancement of technology and digitization, trekkers can connect to their families, share their updates, and also check out for some extra intel while already on the Gokyo Valley Trail.
Chances of Altitude Sickness in Gokyo Valley Trek and Safety Measures
Altitude Sickness is a common issue in the higher altitude of the Himalayas. Once trekkers ascend above 3000 meters, they might start feeling dizzy, having headaches, nausea, lack of appetite, and feel like they cannot continue the journey at all. If you get any of these symptoms while ascending the Gokyo Valley trek, we recommend you inform the guides as soon as possible. Altitude sickness can be caused due to dehydration, exhaustion because of the higher pace, too much energy drain, and the thinner oxygen level in higher altitudes.
Here are the safety measures to prevent altitude sickness while trekking the Gokyo Valley Trail:
- Follow all the physical and mental preparation steps that we have listed in the above section.
- Drink as much water as possible, We recommend trekkers to drink one liter of water after ascending every 500 meters.
- Keep your pace slow but consistent because that helps you store energy in your body and stay calm and peaceful during the time.
- Have a medicine named Diamox before ascending over 300 meters because that can control the possibilities of altitude sickness.
- Do not panic even if you feel the trek is difficult in the higher altitude. Try to stay calm and if the condition is worse, take an extra acclimatization day rather than continuing on the route.
